Description

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish” is a captivating, animated musical-comedy about the magical kingdom of Rosas, where Asha, a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force—a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe—the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico—to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen. Featuring the voices of Ariana DeBose as Asha, Chris Pine as Magnifico, and Alan Tudyk as Asha’s favorite goat, Valentino, the film is helmed by director Chris Buck (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (“Raya and the Last Dragon”), and produced by Peter Del Vecho (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster Jones (“Encanto”). Jennifer Lee (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) executive produces, and Lee and Allison Moore (“Night Sky,” “Manhunt”) are writers on the project. Original songs are by singer/songwriter Julia Michaels and producer/songwriter/musician Benjamin Rice, with a score by composer Dave Metzger.

  • The movie is flawed, but not bad.

I saw this movie twice. In theaters and on DVD at home. The animation is beautiful and the end credits was a tear jerker since it showed almost every Disney movie character in chronological order as celebration of the studio's 100th anniversary. Some of the songs decent, At All Coasts was moving, Knowing What We Know Now was upbeat and catchy, I think the best song in this movie was I'm A Star. I think the main reason why Disney lost $131 million to this movie is because the story and characters lacked development. For example, it was never made clear why King Magnifico would think Asha's 100 year old grandfather Sabino's humble and innocent wish was too dangerous. Sabino's wish is to inspire the next generation with his music and while Magnifico thought it was a great wish, he felt it was too vague which was very ironic and hypocritical of him. As for Asha, while I do understand her being upset about the king refusing to grant her grandfather's wish, she didn't have to be upset about Magnifico refusing to grant some of the other peoples' wishes. Like if those other wishes were dark and evil, the king would have had good reasons to say no but Asha said everybody in Rosas is good yet she doesn't know everybody in the kingdom. As for those who say things like "I'm never watching Disney movies again, because they went down hill forever" well, just because Disney has been making inferior movies in recent years that doesn't stop me from watching them! I still love Disney and I want to see if they can do better again in the future.

This movie was……okay. Well more like bad. Disney made a rip off of Encanto It sucked. Disney is losing their touch they just are doing the same thing why not have a story about something new.🫤 I want more Disney. That was such a waste of time and money for nothing. Maybe write something about Greek mythology like the gods. I know that sounds like Hercules but do something with gods. Thank u for your time.

I will agree with the other commentators: This was not Disney’s greatest movie. The songs were kinda forgettable, the storyline was a little hard to follow along (I’ve got some questions), and the animation was sloppy at some points. I think some of that was intentional, for things like the star and stuff, but if you look at movies like Frozen and Encanto, then this, this animation (specifically in the town, hands, hair, goat, and hands again) was not as impressive. But disagreeing with the commentators, I’m glad I got to watch this movie. It was pretty good. The goat was as hilarious as he was cute. My siblings and I cracked up in the theatre. Besides the remake of the Little mermaid, Disney’s movies haven’t been very good since Encanto. They had...ahem...more mature themes that not every adult agrees with and it’s not something that should be in a kids movie (turning red, light year, strange world, etc) I’m hoping this movie is a sign that says Disney’s done with that stuff. There were good jokes, an interesting (though hard to follow at times) plot. After around 20 minutes I was able to comprehend it all. And the message was good for the first time since 2021. The good inside each of us will defeat the evil. However speaking of evil, that was one thing that annoyed me: I don’t think Magnifico is a villain. *Spoilers* the only reason he wasn’t granting every wish was because he was just trying to protect the city he loved. It wasn’t like he was holding a grudge against anyone he didn’t like by not granting their wish. He was able too see that if he granted a wish, it could be the downfall of the city. I’ll admit, his choice of action wasn’t the greatest, but he was just trying to help. We didn’t get mad at Bruno when *spoiler for encanto* we found out he left the family to protect Mirabel. So why are we mad at Magnifico when he was trying to protect the city? And even when he was using that dark magic book thingy he was doing it to try to help the city. Remember, the queen warned him about not using it, and his response wasn’t, “I’m king. I’m powerful. I can do whatever I want.” Or, “Get away from me woman! I need to become the greatest king in the world and take control of everyone.” No! He said that he was only doing it so he could try to protect his city from the Star that threatened the peoples’ peace and city, because remember he didn’t know that that magic was just a teenager’s wish upon a Star. And after that the magic grabbed a hold of him and he couldn’t escape. But up until then I believe he was just trying to help his kingdom. So that always bugged me, along with this: if Asha’s grandfather is 100 years old, and gave his wish when he was 18, the king has to be older than 100. And I mean, he has white hair, but even with his magic he doesn’t seem to be the kind of person who would use it to keep himself young. And his queen definitely didn’t look 100. She had this long brown hair in a braid and was trying to help Asha save the kingdom from the dark magic. So how old are the king and queen?! But other than those two things plus the sloppy animation, I really did like this movie!! I recommend it to rent, maybe not buy, but i am glad I watched this!! Please ignore all of the snarky comments. There indeed are better Disney movies but that doesn’t mean we need to tear down this one. One more thing: who else thought that the introvert older girl who was quiet and was Asha’s best friend’s sister reminded them of Dolores from Encanto?! I just call her Dolores because of that.

The characters, plot, music, and execution was heavily flawed. The protagonist, Asha is a shallow ”copy paste” character. Her one personality trait is ”quirky and selfless woman who is kind to all,”which is a fine trait for a character but it is her ONLY ONE. She has no other traits, which is bad character writing you should know this Disney. Asha’s friends are only there to represent the 7 dwarfs, you know the characters from an actually GOOD Disney movie. So they could all be removed (exept one I guess but he was only there for a sUrpRiSE TwISt). If you have a large cast of main characters and can remove them all and nothing would change then you should probably remove them. The Star thing was okay… it mental kills me knowing he was suppost to turn into a boy and be Asha’s love interest. That was a great idea that should have been left in, it is devestating that modern Disney thinks falling in love is for weak characters. I hope the goat falls in a well and can never get out, thats my wish Disney you better answer it. The main antagonist was a let down. He never did anything ”evil” until a good fraction of the movie flew by (don’t get me wrong the movie didn’t ”Fly by” for me I just sat there in the theater praying that it would end quickly, it didn’t). Even during the climax he just stood there and didn’t do anything but shoot green energy blasts that DIDN’T DO ANYTHING. He was one of the worst written villians I have ever seen, that is saying a lot. The plot seems like it was written by AI, no I am not being overly critical I am dead serious. I don’t even want to write about it you can Google the script if you like wasting time. The music, walking into the theater I would expect a more theater, play, Broadway type of music, something that flows with the plot and the characters personal goals, like the Disney movies of the past. I was severly dissapointed to be met with generic pop music. I think this is because Disney is trying to make one of their songs be a hit or go viral, ”We don’t talk about bruno” is an example of this. They wanted the replicate that success so they were lazy. The lyrics make no sense in most of the songs and the big words they were going for clutters up the lyrics making the following lines sound stuffed. Most of the time it didn’t even rhyme, come on Disney you can’t remember how to make a song flow it is simple. I don’t even want to mention that horrendous excuse of a villian song ”This is the Thanks I get” is cringe. Are there ANY good points about Wish, no not really the animation somehow sucked, reminder the budget was $200 million yeah that much, they could have done anything else in the world with that money and they make probably one of the worst Disney movies if not the worse one ever. The execution was bad. As an aspiring writer/animator this hurts my soul. You could have done so much better. P.S sorry about the long review, I believe that critisism is only as good as its evidence. So I stated as much evidence as I could, you CAN 100% like this movie and you CAN 100% still go and check it out no one is stopping you :)
