This movie Is one of the best musical movies I have ever seen. It reminds me of my schools marching band.

Absolutely unbearable to watch. My wife loves it. So Iโ€™m subjected to occasionally have to listen to it from the other room because I refuse to sit and watch it. I just donโ€™t get the appeal of it. But then again this genre is not of my liking.
  • Section leaders, what is our concept [again]?

I gotta tell you, fellow viewers. More in hindsight, DRUMLINE doesn't stand the mammoth chance moviegoers say (or have said) it does. The point is if you're going to do a film about marching bands, let alone the crucial percussion section, BE ABOUT THE BAND. Yet, the main focus is on one player: Devon Miles (Nick Cannon). I do appreciate the fact that percussion leader Sean "Big Brother Iron Man" Taylor (Leonard Roberts) and band director Dr. James Lee (Orlando Jones) do not want a single musician showing the others up. [Something that musical acts of all kinds must recognize--collaboration not competition. A useful concept for theatre and dance, too.] But what's missing is a look at the rest of the band, a cinematic projection of the revered concept. Bass drummer Jayson (GQ), tuba player Charles (Earl C. Poitier), cool and independent snare player Diedre (Candace Carey), and fraternity pledge/other bass drummer Ernest (Jason Weaver). What are they going through? What do they hope to get out of joining the band? Get to know them. In fact, why not make DRUMLINE pronounce the anatomy and physiology of the band a bit more, instead of just shoving it to the back--as a means to one cocky protagonist's end? And as for the all-too-popular Laila (Zoe Saldana), unnecessary. (They just have to put that fast-and-in-a-hurry romance in there, don't they?) Besides, there is no such thing as a one-dancer accompaniment--don't let the editing fool you. Plus, if there had to be a connection made between Devon and estranged absentee father Ray, even just a musical one, EXPAND ON IT. Show at least a social bridging of the gap between the two. Overall, 'One band, one sound' ought to translate into 'one cast, one performance'. (In other words, make it a group portrait instead of a mostly one-man show.) As good as DRUMLINE was intended to be, it did not hit the mark it was supposed to. Not in the manner it should have. I'd still watch it, but not on a consecutive basis.

The movie was awesome for the most part. I was a sophomore when this was released. Solid soundtrack effort from Dallas Austin who was the music supervisor and producer. Please add the soundtrack iTunes, it's worth the addition to your music catalog.
